In this week’s edition of Tranquility du Jour, I chat with Jane Tara on:
Jane’s novel, Tilda is Visible, was inspired by a misdiagnosis of a degenerative eye condition that made her question what it truly means to "see." She realized she had spent years being invisible to herself—critical of aging and disconnected from her true self. This sparked a powerful shift in how she embraced midlife, recognizing that aging is not something to erase, but something to honor.
In a world that encourages women to fight aging, Jane sees self-acceptance as an act of rebellion. While she respects personal choices about appearance, she encourages women to sit with the discomfort of aging and embrace the wisdom, power, and beauty it brings. Loving oneself, wrinkles and all, is a radical act.
Jane describes midlife as “crawling through the flames”—a period of upheaval that forced her to confront past trauma, leave a difficult relationship, and finally see herself clearly. Through meditation, self-reflection, and inner work, she rewired her mind, changed deep-rooted patterns, and came out with a newfound sense of self and purpose.
From maintaining 50-year friendships to working with traumatized rescue dogs, Jane has learned that connection and creativity are essential in midlife. Instead of seeking new hobbies, she made more space for what she has always loved—writing, reading, and rescuing animals. Her story is a beautiful reminder that returning to what has always brought us joy can be the ultimate act of self-care and fulfillment.

Jane Tara has published over a hundred children’s books, several plays and five novels. She’s a daily meditator, a sucker for a rescue mutt and, most of all, a front-row cheerleader for her two sons. She spent thirteen years wandering the world and lived in five countries but is now happily at home in Sydney. Her novel Tilda is Visible was released earlier this year.
